Some camera lenses have an extraordinary depth of field. They can take pictures focused on something close at hand, but when the film is developed, you can see objects at a distance, and they are in focus, too. Some lenses, however, with the focus set at infinity, focus only on the distant objects and leave the close objects entirely distorted and fuzzy. When a close-up is taken, the distant objects are not discernable. In this respect, the Gospel of John is a magnificent book
